The architect who found his own way through fashion and surfing on discipline, surfing, and following his heart.
Tommy Zung is a New York-based architectural designer and curator whose multidisciplinary practice, Studio Zung, spans architecture, interiors, furniture, and curation. The son of renowned architect Thomas T.K. Zung — a partner of Buckminster Fuller — he carved his own path through fashion and surfing before returning to the family business on his own terms. His latest project, the Manhattan residence of chef Daniel Humm and actress Annabelle Dexter-Jones, is currently featured in ELLE Decor. Here, he talks discipline, surfing, and following his heart.
What do you do when you hit a creative block?
Look to other creative disciplines for inspiration — sculpture, music, art, poetry — to unlock spontaneity.
What's the worst recommendation someone's given you?
Anything that suggests not following my heart, or a misalignment of my values.
