Sarah Harrelson
The Cultured founder who saw art, design, and fashion as one conversation on Moleskine journals, walking as therapy, and the women who think independently.

Sarah Harrelson founded Cultured magazine in 2012 on a then-rare premise that now feels obvious: art, architecture, design, and fashion are parts of the same conversation. She’d already had that conversation for years — first launching the Miami Herald’s “Home and Design” section, then editing Ocean Drive and Art Basel Magazine while covering Basel’s inaugural Miami Beach edition from the ground. Cultured has since evolved into a compass for everything next. Its latest proof is the third annual CULT100 issue. Set to be celebrated at the Guggenheim this week, the issue boasts 400 pages, 13 covers, and 100 interviews across art, politics, food, and tech. Here, she talks Moleskine journals, walking as therapy, and the women who think independently.
What’s the worst recommendation someone’s given you?
I loathe when people say, “It will all work out.” It’s not really a recommendation, but it is one of the least helpful things one can say when asking.
What’s the last film you watched that moved you deeply?
Train Dreams
What book have you gifted most?
The Women I Think About at Night: Traveling the Paths of my Heroes by Mia Kankimäki. It’s about creative, independent, and fearless women who refused to take the expected path.
What’s something you bought under $100 that changed your life?
Moleskine journals. I use them every day for my to-do lists and journaling.
What’s the last article you sent to a friend?
I send a lot of articles around, arguably too many. The last one was this review of Helen Garner’s newly released collection of short fiction.
