Wired headphones are having a moment - partly because people are tired of losing a single earbud (or five), or still wary of tiny wireless signals beaming through their skulls. These Sony MDR-5A Stereo Headphones, released in 1981 as an early Walkman accessory, were once cutting edge, and are now a rare collectible that still offer hi-fi sound. The Walkman itself was born because Sony cofounder Akio Morita wanted to listen to stereo music while playing tennis. Engineers scrambled, and portable personal listening became a thing.
