The model wears a Telepresence Helmet-Mounted Display by CAE Electronics, a Quebec firm founded in 1947 that still produces flight-training equipment for commercial and military pilots. Irving Penn photographed it for an August 1995 Vogue story on women beginning to shop for beauty products “on-line.” Paired with Chanel Crème Lipstick in Beige, the helmet — designed to enhance the wearer’s vision beyond the naked eye — now reads like a forecast: a beauty shopper outfitted with augmented sight just as online commerce and early digital communities were about to blow the world open.
