Naked Dressing
Sheer, barely-there dressing has taken over the red carpet, and even Cannes couldn’t beg the stars to cover up.
Naked dressing is exactly what it sounds like — sheer, transparent, or barely-there clothing that makes the wearer look like she forgot the rest of the outfit. It has a longer history than you’d think. Bob Mackie built a notable dress for Cher in 1974 — a beaded sheer gown she wore to the Met Gala, then wore on the cover of Time. JLo’s green Versace dress at the 2000 Grammys literally led to the invention of Google Image Search. By 2026 awards season, Jennifer Lawrence was in sheer Givenchy embroidered with flowers, Jenna Ortega showed everything sideways in Dilara Findikoglu cutouts, and Nicole Kidman wore Schiaparelli like a dare. Even Cannes tried to push back, begging celebrities to wear more clothes. They did not.
Everyone’s going naked, and it’s hard to pinpoint why. In the age of GLP-1s and cosmetic enhancement, is the body the ultimate status symbol? Or is it simply the return of shock value? Are designers making content-friendly clothes that photograph themselves? Or is it a way for women to own perception of their bodies before anyone else? Most likely it’s a bit of everything — there’s endless meaning to be found in the naked form. And that’s probably why we can’t stop putting this trend on (or taking it off).
