Lidl Trolley Bag

The Lidl Trolley Bag treats a supermarket fixture like a design classic. For his second collaboration with the German grocer, artist and designer Nik Bentel lifts the trolley handle, metal cage, and then reformats them into a slim chrome purse.
For Bentel, the shopping cart was already a perfect piece of industrial design — recognizable in any country, unchanged for decades, and never particularly self-conscious. But there’s another layer. For Europeans, it’s all-brow excellence — a blue-and-yellow discount logo suddenly rendered as surreal status. For those of us stateside, it conjures cheeky grocery runs while vacationing abroad, those late‑night Lidl trips, stocking up on cheap wine and foreign snacks, all pinned to a metal cage that has no business being this precious.
