Doing Duality
From Cult Gaia to Wicked Part Two, light and dark is the reigning frame for a contradictory moment

Duality is everywhere right now. Wicked’s Part Two rollout turned “light vs. dark” into a global moodboard: fashion collabs and makeup riffs abound. Brands are leaning in. Cult Gaia titled its Spring/Summer collection “Art of Duality in Motion,” while Shanghai label Shushu/Tong built its fall line around Diane Arbus’s Identical Twins. Even the biennales are in on it: Florence Biennial framed 2025 around “The Sublime Essence of Light and Darkness,” and Bangkok announced its “Angels and Mara” roster — a parable of good versus evil.
You can’t really pin down the aesthetic because it’s less a look than a lens. Duality is becoming the way we read images, stories, and whole cultural arcs. After a year everyone called “the year the villain won,” it tracks that we’re now obsessed with seeing both sides — however simplified, symbolic, or contradictory they might be.
