Day 1



The light has softened, mellowed from the bright glare of summer to a warm wash, gently illuminating the overgrown garden.

A faint, barely-there breeze brushes over my bare arms while lingering heat from the late summer sun seeps into my skin.

It's quiet- a rare gift in my urban garden. The stillness is only broken by the distant cries of geese flying in a long, steady V formation, their wings beating rhythmically as they journey south.

Nearby bees hum through the purple spikes of salvia, gathering the last of the season's nectar before they settle in for the winter.

My breath slows as I lift my face to the sun. I sink deeper into the soft cushions of my chair, fully present in this fleeting moment.

This is the garden in September.

"My day in the garden was filled with weeding—then more weeding, and even more weeding.



Fall on the prairies is a race against time. You hope the snow holds off, but it could fall any day, bringing an abrupt end to the growing season.



The only thing you can do is put your head down and work through the list. You get out early, grab lunch (and sometimes dinner) standing up, and work until the last bit of daylight fades.



It might sound dreadful, but for the obsessed gardener, it’s filled with deep satisfaction."
