Caravaggio - Death of the Virgin 1606 - The model Caravaggio used for central figure of the virgin was actually a dead prostitute dragged up from Rome's river Tiber. It caused great controversy at the time, but none could deny the genius of the young artist. I used the central figure myself for one of my illustrations.
