What happens to the world’s discarded goods? Last year, photographer @alexhuanfacheng traveled to Guangdong, China—a global hub for manufacturing, knockoffs, and electronic waste—to document the hidden economies that thrive on excess. From grey markets filled with cheap replicas to sprawling e-waste recycling hubs, the province reveals the fine line between resourcefulness and environmental devastation. In this complex ecosystem, discarded products find new life, but at what cost? Through striking portraits of local individuals styled in low-cost, second-hand items, Cheng’s work confronts the intersections of waste, capitalism, and material dependency. His images challenge us to rethink our role in this cycle of consumption. Explore more from Atmos Volume 10: Afterlife at the link in our bio.
